Art for Flood Relief Fundraiser

All proceeds from artwork sales will go to New Farms for New Americans, whose crops were destroyed during the summer flood that devastated Vermont. The organization, which gives land and growing resources to refugees and immigrants, lost seven months worth of food for the 100 participating families.

For the majority of NFFNA’s 100 farmers, this is not a hobby nor a business; most have full-time jobs as janitors, food workers, and in hotels. The crops the farmers grow go toward feeding their households throughout the entire year.

The non-profit AALV leases the land to refugee farmers to grow culturally familiar crops, many of which are not readily available in local grocery stores. Refugees in the program come from Somalia, Burundi, Bhutan, Burma, Nepal, and other countries.

The New Farms for New Americans initiative began with the mission of combating food insecurity in refugee resettlement communities, which face hunger at rates as high as 85 percent.
